Did you know?
By law all commercial and private cleaning operations have to ensure that none of their waste water is going where it should not and therefore all hazardous products, such as caustic vehicle-cleaning detergents, effluents, oily waste water, wheel acids, thinners and coolants must be firstly treated before entering the sewer and drainage system.
In order to be compliant with the Environmental Protective Agency, the Automotive Industry has been enforced to impose certain guidelines for commercial and private cleaning operations that have to be stringently adhered to or offenders face strict action if they are found to be non-compliant including heavy fines, potential closures and in the severest cases even imprisonment.
Cleaning operators must have a sediment tank or a silt trap installed to capture contaminated run off waste water and when draining the workshop must have an oil separation system to prevent any waste water effluents, oils or grease from directly entering the drains.
They must clearly mark all storm water drains as only rainwater should be allowed to enter them and must direct all waste water to the sewerage system for correct treatment.
Business owners must ensure that all hazardous chemicals and contaminated components (flammable and corrosive liquids, oil, brake fluid, battery acid and coolants) stored on their premises are in sealed and leak-free containers or bins, making sure they are all undercover and clearly marked accordingly as certain waste liquids are classified as “traceable”, which means they require special monitoring and reporting with special disposal procedures. These include oils, transmission fluids, batteries, solvents, paint waste, oil and fuel filters, unless flushed and drained of oil and in addition traceable liquid wastes must be collected and disposed of by a licensed contractor for recycling or reuse.
